A French dining spot that has been in Lakeview for four years is taking a break following an October fire.
In a recent report from Crain’s Chicago Business, Dear Margaret at 2965 N Lincoln Avenue had to pause operations following an Oct. 6 fire at the restaurant. Smoke damaged parts of the building including the drywall, floors and dining room, causing the need for a relocation. Owner Lacey Irby told What Now Chicago she and staff are looking at empty storefronts in Lakeview and other neighborhoods.
As of three days ago, the building has been sold to a redeveloper. Irby said she and chef Ryan Brosseu would love to stay in the Lakeview neighborhood as locals, the Chamber of Commerce and fellow business owners have been very helpful over the years. Ideally, they would move into a space that is “second-generation real estate” or has an existing build-out.
“It’s an expensive endeavor,” Irby said.
The restaurant near the intersection of W Wellington Avenue became known as a cozy destination for French cuisine. On the menu were pommes dauphine with oyster mousse, pickled red onion and ossetra caviar, pommes varieties, salads, crispy polenta and roasted eggplant. Desserts such as carrot cake and chai creme brulee were also options.
According to the Crain’s article, Irby had been looking for a new location before the fire, as she wanted to fit more customers in the restaurant. The building is 140 years old and already had some structural damage, with soot and ash damaging ventilation. Until a location is confirmed, staff are evaluating where to go from here and will provide updates in the near future.
