Open-mic nights, karaoke and even live acts like magicians could be coming to a new venue in Algonquin soon.

Soundbite Tavern is a new concept planned for 113 S Main Street in the village’s downtown area. This comes from local David Conklin, who has envisioned a new space for music, food and gathering. According to Conklin, the estimated opening date is the second or third week of November.

Conklin has been planning Soundbite Tavern ever since he found the downtown space in March. He originally wanted to bring a music venue to the area, and also recognized there is a large number of restaurants in downtown Algonquin, so he wanted to utilize this market. The menu will feature “cost-conscious” bar food like coneys, sandwiches and appetizers.

“This venture is kind of a labor of love,” Conklin told What Now Chicago.

Earlier this month, the Algonquin Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approval for a special-use permit request to build an entertainment facility, according to a recent The Daily Herald article. Now, the project is going to the Village Board for final approval on Oct. 4.

A longtime dispatch employee for United Airlines, Conklin has also had a passion for music, being a band’s drummer for eight years. He wants the downtown to have a place for other bands and musicians to play. There is also the idea of putting an internet radio station in front of the window to discuss music and the local scene.

Right now, work is being done inside including painting and floor repairs. Conklin is working with his daughter on the project, and they are hoping to introduce it to the community by late fall. For more information on the restaurant and music venue, visit their Facebook page.
