After seven years, the iconic bagel spot may be coming back to Old Orchard mall.
It was reported by The Record that The Bagel owner Marvin Barsky is seeking space at Old Orchard mall in Skokie, 4905 Old Orchard Center. The deli is currently at 3107 N Broadway in Lakeview. Barsky told What Now Chicago there is not an opening date yet as the deal still has to be finalized.
The deli has a long history in Chicago, starting off on the west side in 1950, then moving to Rogers Park in the 60s, coming to Old Orchard mall in 1987 and now remaining in Lakeview since 2018. It was originally started by Elsa and Herman Golenzar, Holocaust survivors who opened the location in 1950.
Menu items are made from fresh home ingredients. Along with bagels, they offer soups of the day, and specials like a caesar salad wrap, BBQ chicken wrap and pepper bacon jam cheeseburger sliders. The new, or former, location will have the same menu, savoring the favorites from the menu. It will carry the Lakeview spot’s theme as a Jewish deli.
“After eight years, people still call and ask if we’re coming back,” Barsky said.
Old Orchard mall is a major shopping center on the north side of Skokie. Their previous address was 4905 Old Orchard Shopping Center, and it is not confirmed if they will be coming back to this address.
In the article from The Record, Barsky said he could sign the deal tomorrow, but this was in late October. There have been delays in getting approvals, but now he is hoping to put a pen to paper by the end of this month. More information on the opening will be released on their website.
