Two ramen shop owners are getting creative with ways to use their recently opened space.

TNT Ramen is now open as of Aug. 1 at 8929 S Commercial Avenue in South Chicago. This was formerly the TNT Mexican Restaurant that was recently turned into this new concept. Now, it is being reported the owners are planning on opening a cafe next door sometime next year.

Owners Antonio and Maricruz Macias have been working on their ramen restaurant for around three years. The owner of TNT Mexican Restaurant, Manuel Perez, was approached by Antonio about acquiring the space after he retired. Antonio has a long history with the restaurant as he visited the spot as a child.

“South Chicago’s ramen spot; where community meets ramen,” says the description on their website.

Maricruz said she and Antonio are first focusing on TNT Ramen, and later in the year they will transition to creating the new cafe. It will have similar dishes to TNT Ramen, but more of a focus on Japanese-style sandwiches to go. There will also be drinks like coffees to choose from.

The owners have the space, it’s just a matter of figuring out how to use it for the cafe. They will renovate it in the near future, after they are finished with work on TNT Ramen. The door to the soon-to-be cafe is located to the right of the ramen shop.

TNT Ramen is open 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. It offers three noodle flavors, tonkatsu, chicken paitan and vegetable. Add-ons like sweet brulee egg and chili oil are available, with desserts and sides.
