Double Door, the popular rock club that operated for 23 years in Wicker Park until it was evicted in 2017, has found a new home in Uptown. The club, now owned by Co-founder Sean Mulroney and Pete Bruce, will open at 1050 W. Wilson Avenue in the historical Wilson Theater building that most recently housed TCF Bank, reports Block Club Chicago. Mulroney told Block Club he hopes to have the venue open by this time next year.
According to comments from the establishment on social media, the new location will give the club increased capacity, from around 500 to 750 patrons. Construction is underway at the new site, which Mulroney and Bruce acquired from Cedar Street for $750,000 earlier this year. A former bank vault in the building’s basement will reportedly transform into a “mini venue lounge.” The theater was built in 1908 and part of Double Door’s construction is geared towards restoring elements of the original structure that have been uncovered.
For over two decades, Double Door brought live performances to Wicker Park, hosting everything from rock and pop to funk, soul, hip-hop, metal, and more. While they work toward reopening the venue, the owners have begun hosting what they call Sunday Jams, or free performances anyone can attend provided they RSVP.
