Automotive systems supplier Cooper Standard plans to close its New Lexington manufacturing plant in Ohio. The closure will result in layoffs affecting more than 200 employees at the New Lexington facility. Layoffs are expected to begin in 2026, with the plant’s final closure planned for 2027.
Cooper Standard Announces New Lexington Plant’s Closure
An official report states that Cooper Standard will permanently shut down its New Lexington outlet located at 2378 State Route 345 NE. Founded in 1960, the automotive systems supplier issued the notice under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act.
The report adds that Cooper Standard can initiate the required process for separations by around February 6, 2026. After this, the closure is expected to take place another year later, approximately on July 1, 2027.
The decision stems from Cooper Standard’s ongoing analysis of plant utilization. The company cited efforts to improve manufacturing operations and overall efficiency.
Impact on Local Employees
Cooper Standard’s sudden decision to shutter the New Lexington, Ohio plant is set to affect around 228 employees in total. From hourly workers like electricians and operators to salaried professionals like engineers, plant managers, and supervisors, employees across multiple roles are going to lose their jobs.
The Local Union Has Been Notified
According to the filing, UAW Local 1686 has been notified of the company’s plans. Tyler Wolfe is the president of the Union.
The Union is expected to get notified of the employee layoffs 60 days or before the last date of their employment at the Ohio plant.
Employees of Cooper Standard, New Lexington can use their bumping rights while the agreement is in effect between the company and UAW Local 1686. Details regarding the same can be found in Article 7, Section 9 of the collective bargaining agreement.
Some affected employees may be eligible for transfers to other Cooper Standard facilities, depending on availability and qualifications.
With the planned closure and potential employee transfers, Cooper Standard is set to undergo a broader operational restructuring over the next two years.
