Tonchin, a Tokyo-founded ramen restaurant, is preparing to open its first Columbus location at 965 N. High St. in the Short North, taking over the former Mecha Noodle Bar space, according to the Columbus Underground.
Founded in Tokyo in 1992 by brothers Katsuhiro and Motohiro Sugeno, Tonchin expanded to the United States in 2017. The brand has since grown to include locations in New York City and Los Angeles, bringing its Japanese ramen tradition to diners across the country.
Tonchin is known for its Tokyo-style ramen, including its signature Tokyo Tonkotsu, which features a rich broth made with pork, chicken bones, and vegetables. The restaurant also prepares its wavy noodles fresh daily to complement its broths.
Other menu offerings include Smoked Dashi, Spicy Tan Tan, and Miso Ginger ramen. The menu also features dipping noodles, mazemen, and Japanese-inspired starters. Selections may vary by location.
The upcoming restaurant will occupy the former Mecha Noodle Bar space at 965 N. High St. Mecha previously operated at the address before closing in December 2025.
Tonchin’s arrival will bring another ramen option to the Short North dining scene. However, an official opening date and further details about the Columbus location have not yet been announced.
What Now Columbus reached out to Tonchin for additional information about the upcoming location, including its anticipated opening timeline, but did not receive a response at the time of publication.
