Denver is set to get a new bookstore built specifically around horror, with Broom Book & Candle planning to open this fall at 482 S. Broadway. The upcoming business will combine a spooky-themed book and merch shop, an event space, and a cafe/wine bar component, according to the company’s website.
The concept’s co-founders are Amanda Shafer and KJ Brantley, a Kickstarter campaign for funding the build-out of the business states. Shafer is a horror writer herself, and has experience creating slasher summer camp experiences.
Their goal is to raise $25,000 to put towards the venture, and they have currently received nearly $18,000 in donations. Supporters will receive a variety of rewards for their generosity, from discounts, bookmarks, signed books, candles, and t-shirts to VIP pre-opening party tickets, spooky photoshoots, or event giveaways.
Events are also expected to be a significant part of the business. The company’s website currently promotes in-store programming and an author-in-residence program offered in partnership with the Women in Horror Media and Arts Association.
The owners were not available for comment prior to publication.
