A new Whataburger is planned for Houston’s inner loop, with the fast-food chain set to convert a former Taco Cabana restaurant. According to Coming Soon Texas, the property at 167 Yale St. will have an F&B tenant once again, after the QSR spot renovates and takes over the now-vacant space.
The project calls for a full interior and exterior renovation of the existing 3,720-square-foot building. Construction will cost around $1 million and is scheduled to begin in October and wrap up in late March.
Last year, Houston Historic Retail reported that Taco Cabana had quietly closed six locations around the Houston area, including the 167 Yale Street spot.
This move adds another location in central Houston for the Texas-born burger chain’s expanding footprint. Started in San Antonio more than 70 years ago, it sold a majority stake to BDT Partners in 2019, and its portfolio is now nearing 1,200 stores in 17 states.
Whataburger’s menu remains centered on made-to-order burgers, alongside chicken, breakfast and other offerings. Its restaurants operate around the clock, seven days a week.
