Something smooth, sweet and seriously creamy is coming to Yulee as Whit’s Frozen Custard prepares to open its newest Northeast Florida location.
The new shop is planned for 464073 SR 200 in Yulee, according to a city filing, while Whit’s website lists the location as coming soon.
The franchise will be owned and operated by Barb and Ken Porter, who decided to bring the concept to Yulee after seeing an opportunity for more frozen dessert options in Nassau County.
Ken Porter said the couple chose the area in part because they live nearby in Fernandina Beach and saw a gap in the local market.
“I actually live in Fernandina Beach,” Porter said. “There really is very limited either ice cream or any type of frozen desserts, custard, whatever in Nassau County.”
Porter also has a personal connection to frozen custard. He grew up in Ohio, where he became familiar with Whit’s-style custard and developed a longtime appreciation for it. “I love, love the custard,” he said. “It’s just superior quality to anything else.”
That experience helped inspire the couple to open their own location, bringing a product Porter already knows and enjoys to a community close to home.
At Whit’s, customers can expect fresh-made frozen custard in a variety of flavors, forms and combinations.
The custard is made fresh daily, with vanilla, chocolate and rotating flavors of the week. Customers can order it by the scoop or choose from a menu of signature treats. Among the options are Whitsers, which combine frozen custard with toppings, and Whitties, which sandwich custard between two cookies. The menu also includes shakes made with custard and milk, sundaes with toppings and classic root beer floats.
Porter said customers can expect the Yulee shop to offer fresh frozen custard in “all kinds of shapes, forms, varieties and flavors.”
Whit’s already has a growing presence in Northeast Florida. The brand’s local story began in May 2014, when Michael and Jessica McKinley opened its first Florida location in Atlantic Beach.
Since then, the brand has expanded to several locally owned shops around the Jacksonville area, including locations in Jacksonville Beach, Kernan Square, Mandarin, South Jacksonville and Oakleaf.
