New Yorkrican Express, a new restaurant serving up New York-style Puerto Rican and Dominican cuisine, is set to open soon near the corner of E Sunset Rd and S Sandhill Rd.

What Now Las Vegas confirmed the news in a Friday morning phone call with co-owner and chef Jason Marcelino.

“My mom is Puerto Rican, and my dad is Dominican,” Marcelino said, explaining the food’s origin. The chef himself is a New York native, and this has a major influence on the food. “We’re not bringing a traditional Puerto Rican cuisine here. In New York, the food is a little different, with a little more flavor.”

Menus posted to the restaurant’s Facebook page feature Combo Plates like La Bandera (white rice, red bean, sweet plantains, served with seasoned baked chicken) and sandwiches that include a Cubano and a Tripleta with chicken, pork, steak, lettuce, tomato, fries, and mayoketchup. Marcelino added that the menu would draw from the style of Cuchifritos New York, with a selection of Puerto Rican fried foods like alcapurrias, sorullitos, and bacalaítos.

New Yorkrican Express will also offer artisanal ice cream and smoothies in flavors like coconut and passion fruit. It will open soon in suite 100 at 3720 E Sunset Rd, a space currently occupied by local taqueria El Panzon. No set opening date is currently available.
