The family-owned Balboa Island sweets shop Sugar ’N Spice, known for its frozen bananas and chocolate-dipped ice cream bars, is expanding to Belmont Shore in Long Beach. The new shop will be located at 5269 E. 2nd St., in the former European Wax Center space, according to Longbeachize.
Sugar ’N Spice traces its roots to Dot & Bob Candies, the original business established in 1945. The family-owned shop has built its reputation around frozen treats at its Balboa Island location.
What Now Los Angeles reached out to owner Mysa Tran, who said the opening is targeted for the first week of December, pending permits and construction timelines.
“We’re excited to bring 81 years of sweet traditions to Belmont Shore while keeping our Balboa Island roots,” Tran told What Now Los Angeles.
The new location will offer the shop’s signature frozen bananas, Balboa Bars, classic scoop ice cream and sundaes. Balboa Bars are ice cream bars dipped in chocolate and coated with various toppings.
Tran, who co-owns the business with Khe Lam, said Belmont Shore appealed to them because of its similarities to Balboa Island, including its coastal atmosphere, community spirit and locally owned businesses.
“Belmont Shore reminds us of Balboa Island. Both have a charming coastal atmosphere, strong community spirit, and wonderful local businesses. We weren’t just looking for another storefront. We wanted a community where Sugar ’N Spice could truly belong,” she said.
