A new Mexican sports bar is coming to northeast Memphis.

According to recently filed city permits, Ay Mamá Mexican Grill & Cantina is gearing up to launch at 1653 Sycamore View Rd, taking over a former Ruby Tuesday space. Local restaurateur Alfonzo Herrera Hernandez will run the family-operated establishment.

Hernandez told What Now Memphis that Ay Mamá will combine popular elements of chains like Hooters and Buffalo Wild Wings, with multiple TVs to watch sports and “a little bit of everything” on the menu. Guests can look forward to a mix of traditional Mexican dishes such as tacos and enchiladas, as well as classic bar staples like wings and pizza.

With two decades of experience in the restaurant industry and multiple ventures under his belt—including Los Cabos Mexican Bar & Grill and two barbershops in the Memphis area—Hernandez understands what it takes to run a successful business. He’s also deeply familiar with the local landscape and hopes to bring something positive to the community.

“I know the area is kind of bad… but I want to push to bring more people,” said Hernandez. “I want to bring light to the area, you know? I want to make something big, something different.”

Hernandez is currently finalizing the menu and overseeing renovations. He plans to open Ay Mamá Mexican Grill & Cantina in March of 2025.
