The brothers behind an upscale Mexican restaurant are planning a new location in East Memphis.
Tekila Mexican Cuisine will soon take over the former Carrabba’s Italian Grill space at 5110 Poplar Ave. Owner Alex Gomez, operating under GDL Poplar LLC, purchased the 6,464-square-foot building for $2.8 million, according to the Shelby County Assessor’s office.
Alex’s brother, Jose, will manage the new site. The duo told The Daily Memphian that more details will be disclosed once work begins on the layout.
While Alex mentioned that the new location will feature a fresh concept for Memphis, sources familiar with the restaurant suggest it may be an upscale steakhouse, similar to the Tekila location that recently opened at the Nineteenth Century Club in Midtown.
That location’s menu features Mexican-inspired upscale brunch, lunch, and dinner options, including the Tekila Sunrise Burger, Ribeye Tacos, Shrimp Chipotle Pasta, Salmon Risotto, and 24k Gold Tomahawk. Tekila’s Southaven location offers a similar menu, though with less of an emphasis on steak.
The Gomez family is making a significant investment in the 20-year-old Poplar Ave building and plans to open the restaurant in early 2025, according to Shane Soefker, founder and managing partner of Cicada Capital Partners.
