For more than three decades, Lucy’s Retired Surfers Bar & Restaurant has been a nightlife staple in the Warehouse District, building a reputation for tropical vibes and drinks.
After millions of dollars in renovations to a neighboring historic property, the iconic bar is slated to unveil a massive expansion in December that will include 8,000 square feet of additional dining room space, expanded courtyard seating, another balcony, an elevator for greater access, and private event space. Renovations are currently wrapping up and the bar is expected to remain open as they are completed.
“Lucy’s has been a mainstay of New Orleans nightlife for over 30 years – celebrating Saints games, Mardi Gras parades and countless happy hours,” John Kirkendoll, founder and chief executive officer of Kirkendoll Management told What Now New Orleans. “Many of our customers are like family. We’ve been fortunate to take the Lucy’s experience to other locations, but New Orleans will always be home.”
To complete the renovations to the property at 709 Tchoupitoulas St., Kirkendoll Management worked with the Historic District Landmarks Commission. The company also worked with architect Nicholas Musso and invested $3.5 million to restore the neglected historic property.
“The opportunity to offer everything people love about Lucy’s on a larger scale was just too good for us to pass up,” Kirkendoll said. “Having more space for sports, late-night parties, events and receptions, convention gatherings and parade watching was something we never would have imagined until it was a possibility.”
In addition to having more space for dining and private events, the bar has ADA accessibility for those who are differently-abled.
“There will also be more space for us behind the scenes to better serve our customers,” added Pete Montecino, chief operating officer at Kirkendoll Management. “Our goal is for the space to feel exactly like Lucy’s… only even better.”
Even though Lucy’s is known for its strong drinks, particularly the infamous Scorpion Shot, it is a family-friendly restaurant without gambling machines. It also has a balcony that’s perfect for parade- and people-watching.
