A new sports bar with food and live entertainment appears to be taking shape on General De Gaulle Drive in Algiers.
According to documents filed with the City of New Orleans, business owner Monika Bowman has been building out Jays Sports Bar and Grill in the Azalea Plaza. The project is currently in the construction phase and an opening date has not been set.
The plaza currently has a number of other restaurant, retail and professional services businesses. We reached out to Bowman for comment, and she declined to provide any comment for now, only citing frustration in dealing with red tape. In her filings, Bowman said Jays Sports Bar and Grill will provide a “great safe environment with tasty food, lots of laughter and greatness.” She has also filed a permit for live music with the city.
The development of Jays Sports Bar and Grill is the latest sign of progress in Algiers, and many people credit city councilman Freddie King III with a lot of the progress that has been made in recent months. The neighborhood recently got media attention for the removal of 2.2 miles of bike lanes, which many residents requested. Algiers residents specifically credited King for the removal of the lanes and other recent infrastructure improvements.
