InterContinental New York Barclay Joins Historic Hotels of America
InterContinental New York Barclay blends historic charm with modern luxury. The hotel was established in 1926 and was initially a project under the Grand Central Terminal development area. Originally planned as a 14-story building, the hotel was designed in the Colonial Revival style.
The hotel is now officially recognized by Historic Hotels of America, joining a prestigious group of historic U.S. hotels. Over the years, it underwent a few renovations to evolve with time while still preserving its elegance.
The hotel offers about 704 guest rooms and suites following its renovation in 2016. Its prime location makes it a convenient spot for guests and business travelers. The hotel is centrally located near New York icons like Fifth Avenue, Grand Central Terminal, and Rockefeller Center.
Over nearly a century, the Barclay has hosted some of history’s most notable figures. Early guests included industrialists William Henry Barnum and Walter W. Law, as well as actor Charles Ray and composer Amy Beach.
Ernest Hemingway completed his novel ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’ at the hotel after returning from Spain in 1940.
Renovations over the Years
Following a dip in popularity during the 1960s and Pan Am’s acquisition, the hotel underwent major renovations.
Renovations refreshed the guestrooms and public areas while preserving iconic design elements, boosting the hotel’s reputation. A visit from Bill Clinton during his 1990s campaign helped put the hotel back in the spotlight.
In 2014, the hotel received an investment of $180 million to preserve the hotel’s architectural integrity. Following this, the hotel spent the next two years reimagining the space with the changing times and standards.
The InterContinental New York Barclay will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2026, solidifying its place as a New York cultural landmark.
