New York City has announced a $400 million public investment for developing a housing unit at the Stapleton waterfront of Staten Island. The city officials such as Mayor Eric Adams, Andrew Kimball (President and CEO of Economic Development Corporation), Deputy Mayor Adolfo Carrion, Kamillah Hanks (City Councilmember), Momo Sun (Regional Director at WoodWorks), and Ron Orgel (Managing Director at Phoenix Realty Group) gave statements about the project details and their opinions.

The announcement was made on May 12, 2025, as part of the growth plans for the North Shore of Staten Island. The Mayor addressed the housing crisis in the area. He assured residents that the City has not forgotten its boroughs. The authorities aim to solve the housing crisis and affordability issues with these projects.

Leading With Sustainability: Meet the Project Leaders

The Stapleton project addresses the housing crisis. It also promotes sustainable construction and new techniques. Artimus and the Phoenix Realty Group will be the development leaders of the project.

The city is planning development in all five boroughs. The Stapleton project will feature the biggest mass-timber construction. These developments have low carbon footprints. They protect the environment from construction stress. Plus, they take less time to build. Wood-based construction materials are planned for the interiors.

WoodWorks will boost mass timber production and offer technical help for the project. Momo Sun, the Regional Director, claimed that these wood materials are on par with the construction and fire requirements.

Location and Vision of the Stapleton Project

The Stapleton project will use the old Stapleton Homeport site. It has been empty since 1994, when the U.S. Navy left. It will stretch from the corners of Front and Canal Streets to the Stapleton waterfront.

The 32-acre project will feature 500 housing units. Of these, 125 units will be reserved for affordable housing. Families with incomes in the range of 40% and 80% of the area’s median income can get them. Construction is anticipated to commence in 2027.

The City has other projects and plans for the area. The broader redevelopment plan includes 2,100 mixed-income housing units, ground-floor retail spaces, a 600-seat public school, and various community amenities. Several initiatives are ongoing in the area, and now the future will tell what it will look like!
