NYC Submits Plans for The Beacon, an Affordable Housing Project
The City of New York has submitted plans for The Beacon, a 282-unit affordable housing project in Harlem. According to filings, the development will be located at 413 East 120th Street, East Harlem, Manhattan. The project will increase affordable housing options in East Harlem, with units reserved for families who have experienced homelessness.
The Beacon is a partnership between Ascendant Neighborhood Development and The Community Builders, with architecture by Paul Castrucci Architects.
“At TCB, we pride ourselves on building and sustaining strong communities where all people can thrive,” said Desiree Andrepont, Senior Project Manager at The Community Builders. “It is a privilege to partner with Ascendant Neighborhood Development Corporation and bring together the East Harlem community with this exciting project. The transformation of the Multi Service Center will create a collaborative space to unite neighborhood leaders, local organizations, and the greater community, and the development will provide much-needed affordable housing for generations to come”.
The Project and Its Impact on the Community
The Beacon will be built on a former historic school building site and in connection with the East Harlem Multi-Service Center. The project will reuse the historic school building, blending sustainability with preservation of its architectural character.
Installation of solar panels on the 6th floor will generate 280 kW of energy and will take care of 20% of the building’s energy needs. A covered walkway called Wagner Way will link The Beacon to nearby homes and the Multi-Service Center, making shared resources easily accessible.
The Beacon will transform East Harlem and will positively impact the community. This project will cater to the community’s needs, along with preserving the historical legacy of the region. The design encourages community interaction while promoting sustainability and reducing the building’s environmental footprint.
When finished, The Beacon will bring affordable apartments to Harlem, along with shared spaces and services designed for residents. The project aligns with the city’s efforts to expand affordable housing, leveraging the team’s local expertise to benefit East Harlem residents.
