One of Brooklyn’s favorite dive bars is finally getting ready to cross over the East River.
The Commodore is a wickedly popular dive bar and restaurant based out of North Williamsburg. The concept was established by owners Chris Young and Taylor Dow, two first-time bar-owners, in 2010 at 366 Metropolitan Ave in Brooklyn. Described by many as a “five star dive bar”, the spot has earned mass acclaim among locals over the past decade of its operation. They are especially famous for their fried chicken sandwiches, which were once colorfully described by Bon Appetit as “the best ****ing fried chicken sandwich in Brooklyn, or New York City, or probably the world”.
Now though, Manhattanites will soon be able to try out the famous chicken sandwich for themselves when the Commodore debuts their newest Alphabet City outpost in the near future. According to a recent liquor license application submitted with the local community board, owners Young and Dow have just acquired the lease for a brand new space at 14 Avenue C, where they plan on opening a brand new expansion for their storied Brooklyn bar.
The space at 14 Avenue C was previously home to Sanatorium, a chic cocktail lounge that offered elevated tonics and elixirs with pharmaceutical theming. The space, which is located at the corner of East Second Street and Avenue C, is expected to seat about 40 guests inside at one time, featuring a 20′ x 4′ bar that will seat an additional 10 guests. Additionally, the owners are also proposing an outdoor space that will offer 14 extra seats and will close nightly at 10:00 PM.
For the menu, you can expect to enjoy the same southern-fusion delights that Williamsburg locals have been enjoying for years. There will be plenty of salads and bar snacks like nachos, fries, and soup, as well as chef’s specials like tuna melts, po boys, and a fried green tomato sandwich. Of course, no Commodore expansion would be complete without their famous fried chicken, which can be ordered hot or mild, as well as a plethora of brunch options for early afternoon weekend hangouts with friends.
At the moment, Dow and Young are currently getting ready to propose their new expansion to the community board in order to acquire the necessary liquor license. They are currently proposing operating hours of 4:00 PM – 2:00 AM from Monday through Wednesday, 4:00 PM – 4:00 AM on Thursday and Friday, 11:00 AM – 4:00 AM on Saturday, and 11:00 AM – 2:00 AM on Sunday, though those hours are subject to change pending the board’s approval.
