One of New York’s oldest Spanish food importers is currently set to seriously alter its menu with a brand new liquor license.
Despaña Fine Foods and Tapas has been a neighborhood staple since 1971. Operating at 408 Broome Street for over four decades, Despaña celebrates its Spanish heritage by bringing the unique flavors of Spain right to the heart of New York. Their grocery store offers a wide range of boutique and gourmet products that are imported directly from Spain, selling delicacies like Don Bocarte Anchovies, Amanida Olives, and of course their famous chorizo. Today, the store even provides gourmet restaurants across the city with their specialty Spanish imports.
In addition to their popular grocery store, Despaña also operates a full-service café and tapas restaurant. Taking advantage of their access to gourmet delights imported from Spain, the restaurant serves its goods directly to customers, offering light snacks like cheese and meat plates, olives, specialty vegetables and legumes, and even anchovies and assorted jars of seafood pate. Of course, with such an appetizing menu of meat, cheese, and spices, something has always been missing from the café…
Wine! The answer was wine. While Despaña offers specialty Spanish wine for wholesale, the café never had the liquor license necessary to serve that wine alongside its food. For years, the delicious cheese and meats have gone tragically unpaired. Now though, Despaña vice president Angelica Intriago has just filed for a brand new beer, wine, and cider license for Despaña. Finally, the two Despaña concepts can be united as one, and guests will be able to enjoy rare Spanish wines in a cute corner café as they dine on some of the finest chorizo found in New York.
Despaña is also applying to maintain its current outdoor café, which when combined with their new wine license will enable guests to savor fine Iberian delights as the busy Broome Street foot traffic passes them by. If you’re still a little too pandemic-weary to enjoy indoor dining, then you can always order Despaña’s premium Spanish imports delivered directly to your location through their website.
