Il Laboratorio del Gelato is expanding to a new location. The gelato brand has taken a lease for a 1,200-square-foot space at 1062 Third Ave., according to leasing documents obtained by What Now New York. Owner Jon Snyder confirmed the new location with What Now New York in a message.
This location in Lenox Hill will join current spots in the Lower East Side, Hoboken and Upper Montclair, as well as an international location in Shanghai.
Snyder ventured into the gelato business with the goal of bringing the Italian method of making gelato to New York. After building and selling the Ciao Bella Gelato Company in the 1980s and taking some time away, Snyder founded Il Laboratorio del Gelato in 2002 on the Lower East Side. The idea was to provide New Yorkers with a custom gelato lab where they could experience unique flavors. He and the team place an emphasis on sourcing quality ingredients for premium flavor offerings.
“Today, il laboratorio del gelato is a close-knit team dedicated to the creation of world-class gelato,” the website states. “We adhere to the original artisanal Italian method of gelato-making in order to create exceptional gelato and sorbet: dense texture, superior consistency and absolute purity in flavor.”
The brand offers an extensive list of flavors including cheese-based flavors like cheesecake and mascarpone; various types of chocolate ranging from dark chocolate mint to mocha; fruity flavors like black currant and blood orange; nutty flavors like brown butter pecan and hazelnut; and spice-based flavors like ginger and vanilla saffron. The list features nearly 300 flavors, according to the website.
As of now, an opening timeline for the Lenox Hill location has not been revealed.
