Michelin star-winning chef Sungchul Shim, who is behind Korean tasting restaurant Kochi, is bringing a new steakhouse, Gui, to 776 Eighth Avenue this month. The steakhouse will serve dishes inspired by Korean cuisine, according to a release.
However, there is more in the works at the address. A second omakase concept is on its way to the second floor of the two-story space, with plans for that spot to open this summer, according to Eater NY.
Gui — which translates to “grilled” or “roasted” in Korean — will serve USDA prime cuts, wagyu, seafood and family-style rice and noodle-based dishes. Shareable menu highlights include the DolSot Bibim Bap (rice, vegetables, fried egg, gochujang sauce), Kimchi Wagyu Fried Rice (wagyu and kimchi), Dan Dan Noodle and Soondubu JJigae (spicy tofu stew). The beverage program will consist of fine wine and spirits, including soju.
“We are excited to introduce GUI to New York City,” Shim said in a statement. “Our menu has been meticulously crafted to cater to both steak enthusiasts and those eager to explore new flavors, while also being accessible and familiarly comforting to patrons who love a traditional American steakhouse experience with a sprinkling of Korean and Asian influences.”
Gui will seat 130 guests. In tandem with the steakhouse, Shim is opening Bar 92 on the ground floor. The bar will seat 38 and offer Asian-inspired cuisine with western influences. Menu items will include the Gui Shrimp Burger, Wagyu Katsu and Dry-Aged Beef Burger.
Shim opened his first restaurant, Kochi, in New York City in 2019. It features a signature menu with items like trout bibimbap, halibut and flank steak. He is also behind Mari.
