Dominican spot La Casa del Mofongo is set for expansion, with plans to open the local chain’s first location in Midtown at 29 West 36th Street this spring.
Founder Felix Cabrera launched La Casa Del Mofongo 25 years ago. His son Pablo “P.J.” Cabrera told What Now New York that they are looking forward to reaching a new crowd in Midtown.
“Wherever we put the restaurants, we usually get good feedback and people like the food, people like the atmosphere,” Pablo said. “We figured Midtown would be a perfect place to try the same thing again.”
This will be the fifth location for the brand, joining locations currently open in Washington Heights, the Bronx and Paterson, New Jersey. Another location recently burned down and has yet to be renovated.
La Casa del Mofongo features menu highlights such as mofongo, the Caribbean dish made with mashed plantains, garlic and pork rinds that also serves as the namesake for the restaurant.
The Midtown location will feature three floors, with main dining areas on the first and second floors that will seat more than 150 guests and an additional lounge area in the basement. Customers can expect a mix of Latin and American music to set the atmosphere.
Pablo also said they will have more than 20 big screens to attract the sports crowd for sports viewing.
“We just hope to fit into the community and last a long time,” Pablo said.
