A thrilling new concept is making its way to First Avenue later this year. It’s called Nudibranch, and it’s expected to open up at 125 First Avenue.
Begun as a popup in 2019, Nudibranch is an original concept from veteran chefs Jeffrey Kim, Matthew Lee, and Victor Xia. Sourcing their experience from years of cooking at New York icons like Momofuku and JUA, Nudibranch is the first time the young chefs are setting off on a project of their own design.
The name itself is sure to turn some heads, but it has nothing to do with nudity. A nudibranch is actually a mollusk, a soft-bodied gastropod known for its extraordinary coloring. The restaurant’s name reflects a metaphor for the chefs’ philosophy on dining. The nudibranch, like a shockingly good meal discovered in a dive bar, is something that is difficult to find without looking. Buried under mud and coral, only when they are found does the glory of their true colors show. The chefs see their own restaurant like a nudibranch, something beautiful and colorful that has to be discovered to be enjoyed.
Theme aside, the food is said to be as delicious as the nudibranch is beautiful. Featuring a rotating tasting menu of chef’s choice selections, Nudibranch is a chance to experience something brand new that can’t be found at other restaurants. From Canto Frog Legs, to Hazelnut Shrimp and Crispy Pork Shank, Nudibranch serves a truly diverse palate that attempts to bring the finest food from around the world to one centralized restaurant.
The new restaurant, which will be Nudibranch’s first full brick-and-mortar location, will be replacing Ravagh Persian Grill, which closed during the pandemic. Thankfully, Ravagh still operates three other locations in Manhattan and Long Island. For more information about Nudibranch, be sure to follow them on Instagram to track their latest pop-ups while you wait for the full restaurant.
