Get ready New York, a delicious new sushi restaurant is making it’s way to Chelsea later this year.

Kaito Sushi is a very popular sushi restaurant located in Midtown at 244 West 72nd Street. Founded by Yoko Hasegawa in 2018, Kaito Sushi is a world-class experience Japanese restaurant that offers an exclusive omakase experience from 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM. As Kaito puts it, every plate of sushi they serve “achieves that elusive, cuisine-defining balance of sweet, salty, and sour.”

Featured in the Micheline Guide, Kaito has been described as “an absolutely welcome gem” by the prestigious publication. Focusing mainly on nigiri, Kaito offers either a 12-course menu or a 6-course menu, depending upon your mood. Named after the Japanese word for a refreshing sea breeze, Kaito is considered by many to be a rare jewel in a desert of mediocre sushi options.

Now, after only three years of successful operation in Midtown, Yoko and the Kaito team are preparing to open up their second restaurant. Moving into the vacant space at 200 202 Seventh Avenue, the new restaurant will be titled Kaito Sushi & Izakaya. Izakaya refers to the Japenese term for a venue in which locals can grab a drink, settle in, and get comfortable. Envisioned as a more approachable, relaxed version of the original Kaito concept, the new Izakaya menu will feature monthly specials and specialty cocktails and sake offerings. Adding a slew of new items to the menu, guests will be able to enjoy everything from sushi and sashimi to popcorn shrimp and BBQ pork.

Moving into the former Champingon Catering space, Kaito Sushi & Izakaya will offer guests a total of 2,430 square feet of space between the ground floor, cellar, and planned sidewalk cafe. With enough room to comfortably seat up to 43 guests, Kaito Sushi & Izakaya will be a little bit bigger and more welcoming than the original Kaito, which serves up to 12 patrons at one time.
