Montero Bar & Grill, a fixture in Brooklyn Heights, is changing hands as its long-time owner Pepe Montero retires, according to a liquor license transfer application filed with Brooklyn Community Board 2. Pepe Montero is passing the bar unto Alex and Miles Pincus, brothers and co-owners of Crew Hospitality, first reported by the New York Post.

Montero was first founded in 1939 by Pilar and Joseph Montero and moved in 1948 to its current home in 73 Atlantic Ave. where it’s been ever since. Pepe met the Pincus brothers and became friends, Alex Pincus writing in an Instagram post, “All this time he’s been teasing us about buying the bar, Careful what you joke about ;)”

The Pincus brothers take over the bar in March, promising that they’re “keeping Montero, Montero.” The heart of the bar — the decor, the cheap beer, the karaoke — will remain. Pincus adds that they’ll be implementing free pool and Sunday dinners, $10 per head.

Thematically, the restaurant group is the perfect new owner of the nautical-themed bar that used to serve sailors out of its location right next to the pier. Crew’s fleet includes nautical-themed restaurants, including Pilot and Grand Banks, two separate restaurants built aboard ships. The Pincus brothers take over in March, when “we can celebrate together at the bar,” Pincus writes. “And the best part: Pepe promised he’ll still man the door whenever he can.”
