An exciting new bakery is currently getting ready to open up on the Upper East Side later this year.
Ergys Janku is a well established New York based restaurateur who has been operating on the Upper East Side for years. He is best known for starting the popular Barking Dog Restaurant along with Emin Alliu and Sokol Kaci. In fact, What Now New York just covered their most recent expansion yesterday. Now, in addition to their recently announced Italian restaurant, the team will also be opening a companion bakery next door.
The new bakery, which has yet to be officially named, will be opening up at 1649 Third Avenue. The bakery will be replacing Fetch, a popular sandwich shop that partnered with local animal shelters to provide charitable relief to animals in need – an appropriate location for the dog-friendly founders of Barking Dog. The location boasts about 2,000 square feet of space, and is expected to comfortably seat about 74 guests in total.
In a phone interview with What Now New York, Janku confirmed that the new bakery would be highlighting traditional European pastries, with an emphasis on sweet desserts. Janku is also in the process of acquiring a tavern license for the space, which will feature a six-seat bar in the back of the bakery. Like their new Italian restaurant, the bakery is expected to operate seven days a week from 10:00 AM – 1:00 AM.
The bakery will also participate in the DOT Open Restaurant program and will operate a small, unobtrusive sidewalk cafe outside the premises. Janku confirmed that he hopes to have the new bakery operational within five months, though he is still very early into development and has not even finalized a name for the concept yet. Unfortunately, because the project is still so young at this point, there are no social media profiles to direct your attention to for further updates.
