Bongiorno New York! You better be hungry, because a brand new fine dining establishment is making its way from the banks of the Tiber right to your plate.
As a native Roman, owner Giovanni Peluso carries deep affection for his hometown. Moving to New York in 1991, Giovanni has been a dedicated promoter of Roman culture and has done everything in his power to help bring Italian expats and American Romanophiles together to celebrate the storied history of the ancient city.
Out of his abundant love for his hometown and affiliated soccer team, he founded the Roma Club New York in 2008. Building a passionate stronghold in the heart of the city, the club has become one of the most significant Roma clubs beyond the borders of Europe. Welcoming all AS Roma fans regardless of their national origin, Peluso’s Roma Club has become the de facto organization for all tri-state romanisti.
Now, as an extension of his passion for Roman cuisine, sports, and culture, Giovanni Peluso is opening a brand new Italian restaurant to continue the celebration of his heritage. The as-yet unnamed project is described as a “First Class fine dining establishment serving gourmet Italian cuisine” and is to expected serve a carefully curated selection of fine wines alongside the gourmet dishes.
Moving into the spot at 195 Spring Street, Giovanni’s new restaurant will be replacing Bombay Bread Bar. Open since 2016, Bombay Bread Bar was a popular SoHo Indian restaurant spearheaded by Chef Floyd Cardo. Attracting an eclectic mix of tourists and locals alike, the bar was described by Eater NY as “a magical love letter to Indian bread.” Sadly, the restaurant closed its doors in 2019 due to financial stresses from an increase in New York’s minimum wage, and Chef Cardoz has since abandoned the project in favor of his more financially viable restaurants in India.
With 3,000 square feet of space available, the location previously occupied by Bombay Bread Bar is well-suited for the kind of fine-dining establishment that Giovanni is envisioning. Of course, AS Roma fans will always have a welcome seat at the bar, which will naturally be showing games whenever Roma is playing.
