The Residence of Mr. Moto, the first concept in NYC to specialize in kaisen-don (a traditional Japanese donburi featuring steamed rice topped with a variety of fresh seafood), will open on Monday, 12/9.

Led by Chef Tomotsugo “Tomo” Kubo and Chef Ry Nitzkowski (formerly the executive chef at Zero Bond), dishes capture the warmth and familiarity of Japanese home cooking with standouts like:

  • Kaisen-don: choose from the Signature Bowl (tuna tartare, scallops, surf clam, yuzu tobiko, cucumber), the delicate Shiro Bowl (amberjack and sea bream sashimi with daikon pickles), or the spicy Aka Bowl (salmon, tuna tartare, yuzu tobiko)
    • Before finishing, guests ring a butler bell for a tableside ochazuke pour, where a rich 60-hour seafood broth is poured over the remaining bowl, transforming the dish. This is part of a centuries old Japanese tradition.
  • Other new and familiar dishes include: Uni Shooters (sea urchin, ponzu, fresh ikura, quail egg), Chawanmushi (silky steamed egg custard, shiitake, fishcake, mitsuba), Miso Cod (3-day miso-marinated cod, cucumber), Oyako Don (marinated chicken, soy egg, seasoned rice, scallions) and a variety of sushi sets.
  • A Kyoto-style Matcha Tiramisu and Hojicha Panna Cotta, made in collaboration with Kitsby, offer a sweet ending
  • Pair with premium craft sake, Japanese beer, and creative libations inspired by Mr. Moto’s close confidants: Taro the Diplomat (peach, pear, shochu), Hiroshi the Captain (plum, yuzu, bitters) and the zero-proof Hideo the Artisan (shiso, vanilla fizz).

Much like the East Village omakase hotspot The Office of Mr. Moto, the Residence of Mr. Moto offers an immersive journey into the world of globetrotting enigma Mr. Moto, with creative elements that evoke the spirit and rich history of 19th-century Japan:

  • Cozy Atmosphere: Styled as the private home of Mr. Moto, the restaurant is filled with personal touches and mementos, including authentic antiques and artifacts from his travels, and a fireplace.
  • Playful, Interactive Details: Guests can summon attendants for a signature ochazuke pour using butler bells between tables, adding an interactive touch to the experience. A hidden bathroom is concealed behind a sliding bookshelf, and a mirrored hallway leads guests to the washroom, providing a whimsical, unexpected adventure.
  • A Final Touch: Before leaving, guests can write a postcard to be mailed anywhere in the world, continuing Mr. Moto’s legacy of global connection.

The Residence Of Mr. Moto is located at 186 Grand Street, Brooklyn, NY 11211.
