The grocery chain Erewhon is heading to Costa Mesa, taking over the former T-Shirts Warehouse space at 140 E. 17th St., according to The OC Register.
Driven by a desire to rethink everyday nutrition, Aveline and Michio Kushi launched Erewhon in the 1960s. Named after a novel they admired, the market introduced a new concept to American consumers and is credited as the country’s first natural foods grocery store. The Los Angeles-based retailer is expected to open the new location in September 2027.
In 2011, the company was purchased in 2011 by Tony and Josephine Antoci. Under their leadership, Erewhon was reimagined as a luxury organic grocery destination, blending health-focused products with a premium shopping experience and paving the way for its rapid expansion across Southern California.
Also known for its celebrity smoothies, organic produce, and premium grocery offerings, the brand prides itself on being a health food store dedicated to organic, unprocessed ingredients.
On its site, the brand defines its mission as “to promote wellness by offering organic, responsibly sourced products that benefit both people and the environment.” It also highlights “the company seeks to foster a culture of care, curiosity, and meaningful progress, positioning itself as more than a grocery retailer by cultivating a strong sense of community.”
