Recent health inspections in Philadelphia identified two food facilities with compliance issues—Crab Du Jour and Frozen Rolled Ice Cream. Although both facilities faced violations, their nature and severity were varied, pointing to critical issues in facility maintenance and food safety.

Please note that the scores mentioned here are from a particular inspection conducted on May 2 and may not represent the future health inspection status of the establishments.

Highlights

  • Several health code violations in matters of cleanliness, storage of food, and pest management were observed at Crab Du Jour.
  • Frozen Rolled Ice Cream was cited for facility-related violations, including equipment cleanliness and vermin-proofing.
  • The two restaurants were directed to correct their violations so they may continue to maintain their operating license.

Two Restaurants Were Cited During Recent Inspections

Two Philadelphia restaurants, Crab Du Jour, and Frozen Rolled Ice Cream, were cited for health code infractions in recent inspections by the Philadelphia Department of Health’s Office of Food Protection. The inspections, conducted on May 2, 2025, identified a range of issues that required immediate rectifications to ensure public safety as well as adhere to local health codes.

Crab Du Jour

The Crab Du Jour inspection identified serious food safety and sanitation issues. Repeat offenses were also noted in facility maintenance.

  • Location: 6234 BUSTLETON AVE, Philadelphia, PA 19149
  • Date: May 2, 2025 (1:20 PM – 2:45 PM

Key Compliance Issues:

The seafood restaurant was cited for 3 risk factor/intervention violations. Inspectors did find other retail practice violations, including:

  • Inadequate handwashing facilities with dirty sinks
  • Improper concentration of sanitizing solution in the 3-bay ware wash sink (less than required 50-100 ppm)
  • No food date labeling throughout the facility (walk-in cooler, refrigerator units, and under-counter refrigerators)
  • No internal probe thermometer is available for cooks to check proper cooking temperatures
  • Signs of insect activity (house flies) and doors left open at the time of inspection
  • Insufficient storage of one-time-use utensils and food-handling equipment
  • Use of non-commercial equipment such as domestic rice cookers and non-NSF microwave
  • Structural problems such as ceiling tile cracks, and floor and ceiling holes in basement space
  • Cluttered basement space with debris covering floors.

Recommended Corrective Actions:

  • Keep handwashing facilities clean and in working order.
  • Have proper sanitizer concentration at all times.
  • Label food with dates to monitor freshness.
  • Equip with thermometers for temperature monitoring.
  • Address pest control and structural repairs.

Frozen Rolled Ice Cream

Frozen Rolled Ice Cream’s violations were mostly facility-related, such as vermin entry points and equipment maintenance.

  • Location: 7274 HANFORD ST, Philadelphia, PA 19111
  • Date: May 2, 2025 (2:50 PM – 4:30 PM)

Key Compliance Issues:

No risk factor/intervention violations were found in the ice cream shop. Some retail practice violations were found by inspectors:

  • The bottom gap of the rear exit door does not seal well to prevent entry of vermin
  • Protective film coverings are still found on new appliances
  • The toilet room door is not self-closing as required
  • The access panel is not readily removable to access the backflow prevention device at the water main placed behind a side wall.

Recommended Corrective Actions:

  • Seal door gaps to deter pest infestation.
  • Remove protective cover from appliances.
  • Install a self-closing device on the toilet room door.
  • Make access panels operative for maintenance.

The health code compliance at Crab Du Jour during the inspection was found unsatisfactory. All the infractions must be corrected, from sanitation to pest control and structural repair. A legitimate food license was not provided during the time of inspection. The restaurant is operating under a change of ownership and must remedy all the violations in order for it to uphold its health license. If issues remain unresolved, the license may be stripped.

Frozen Rolled Ice Cream had some structural and maintenance problems that must be fixed. A License Eligibility Report (LER) was issued during the inspection. Corrective action must be implemented to ensure compliance with health codes. The establishment must complete its structural improvements to avoid potential fines.
