Closures Follow After Bankruptcy Filing by Rite Aid

The drugstore giant filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy this month, citing maximization of value through the sale process of its assets. Rite Aid is planning to sell its stores to CVS. Plus, the longtime retailer will transfer prescription files of its 1,000+ outlets to pharmacy giants like Walgreens, Giant Eagle, Kroger, and Albertsons.

All the drugstore giant’s transactions will, however, need the approval of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey.

Against this backdrop, it should be noted that Rite Aid had previously filed for bankruptcy in October 2023. Following it, the drugstore chain’s locations came down to 1,200 from an earlier 2,300. However, not much changed, which forced Rite Aid to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy this year.

Impacts on Employees and Customers of the Drugstore Giant

While Rite Aid is set to close in Pennsylvania, the drugstore brand plans to keep shops open for the coming few months. The pharmacy retailer claimed that it had acquired around $1.94 billion for enabling the stores to operate during its bankruptcy proceedings. Employees at Rite Aid would also be getting paid while it goes through the sale and other proceedings.

However, the pharmacy retail chain will not buy new inventory, which could result in empty shelves at the open outlets. Additionally, the Philadelphia-based drugstore chain will not offer Rite Aid Rewards points. BonusCash and existing points will also expire based on Rite Aid’s terms and conditions.

The longtime pharmacy store chain will also not accept Rite Aid gift cards, exchanges, or returns starting June 5.

Apart from Pennsylvania, Rite Aid will carry out the shutdown process of its outlets in other U.S. locations as listed below.

California

  • 1583 Highway 99 – Gridley

  • 37435 Main Street – Burney

  • 2801 Foster Ave. – Baltimore
  • 25 Jones Station Rd. – West Severna Park
  • 101 Marlboro Ave Ste 15 – Easton

Virginia

  • 2600 Weir Place – Chester
  • 520 West Broad St. – Richmond
  • Warwick Shopping Center – Newport News
  • 3701 Kecoughtan Rd. – Hampton
  • Cape Henry Sc – Virginia Beach
  • 421 Wythe Creek Rd. – Poquoson

  • 16261 South Highway 101 – Harbor
  • 2336 North Coast Highway – Newport

Delaware

  • 38169 Dupont Blvd. – Selbyville

Rite Aid’s large-scale closures in Pennsylvania and other U.S. locations hint at the drugstore chain’s worsening financial conditions. The second bankruptcy filing alongside an inventory decrease and expiring rewards for buyers reflects its deepening troubles that can continue in the coming months.
