The Philadelphia Department of Health held a routine health inspection at Bleri’s Beanery Cafe on October 28. The report revealed multiple health code violations, including accumulation of dust and grime, and an insect control device placed near the warewashing area with the potential to contaminate.
Bleri’s Beanery Cafe

According to the health inspection report, inspectors found several health and safety violations at Bleri’s Beanery Cafe. Some of these include:
- Soap and paper towels were not available at the handwashing sink in the dishwashing area.
- The tres leches cakes were prepared at home and not in an approved facility, according to the inspection report.
- Milk was stored at 49°F instead of the required 45°F or below. The product was discarded.
- Chemical containers in the coffee prep area were not labeled with their common names. Corrective action was taken, and the bottles were properly labeled, the report noted.
- Prepackaged pastries were missing required labeling, including product name, ingredient list, net weight, distributor information, and nutritional facts.

- An insect control device was found in the warewash area. It could contaminate food, equipment, or utensils. Corrective action was taken, and the sticky fly trap was discarded, as mentioned in the report.
- Boxes of single-use paper products were found stored under a sewer pipe and drain basin.
- Milk crates were being used for elevation, which are not smooth, easily cleanable, or NSF/ANSI approved. Moreover, a non-NSF/ANSI-approved refrigerator and freezer were observed in the basement.
- Grime and dust were observed on the storage shelves at the front counter.
- A leaking gooseneck faucet was observed in the warewash area.
- Dust buildup was observed on vents, along with dust on the wall behind the reach-in refrigerator in the warewash area and debris on the basement floor, the report said.

Follow-up Inspection

According to a footnote in the report, Bleri’s Beanery Cafe is expected to correct the violations mentioned under Section 6-502 of the Philadelphia Health Code. Failure to fix the issues may result in the revocation of the restaurant’s health license and other legal action.
