According to site plans filed in early March and obtained by What Now Philly, Cheddar’s will open in Newark’s Center Pointe Plaza at 1317 Churchmans Rd. Newark, DE 19713. What Now Philly reached out to Cheddar’s president John Wilkerson for comment on the franchise’s Newark debut, but received no feedback.

Cheddar’s was founded in Irving, Texas in 1979 by Aubrey Good and Doug Rogers. Though Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen was originally named Cheddar’s Casual Cafe, the cheesy portion of the moniker came straight from the minds of a 5th-grade class. According to the company website, Good and Rogers implored the class to offer up restaurant name suggestions, eventually landing on “Cheddar’s.”

The website expounds on its core concept, explaining that “[a] scratch kitchen should take the time to make each dish instead of defrosting it. At Cheddar’s, we use quality ingredients and take the time to prepare them in our kitchens each day. To us, making things from scratch means battering your chicken tenders before you fry them. It means smoking your own ribs. It means making your own soup each morning. And it means our food just tastes better.”

Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen has more than 170 locations in 28 states.
