Dickey’s Barbecue Pit is set to open a new location at 1858 Burlington-Mount Holly Rd. Mt. Holly, New Jersey 08060, according to franchisee Jay Patel. Patel says, while there is no definitive debut date for the incoming store, he hopes to open doors three to four months from now.
This is not the first Dickey’s franchise for Patel. In fact, the two-time franchisee owns another Dickey’s in NJ where he takes pride in providing the locals “Southern comfort food.” Patel told What Now Philly he hopes his new store will do the same.
According to the company’s website, Dickey’s Barbecue Pit was created in Dallas, Texas in 1941 by a WW1 veteran named Travis Dickey. Travis was “blessed with the gift of gab and the love of authentic, slow-smoked barbecue.”
In the early days of Dickey’s, the operation was almost as simple as the menu: “Miss Ollie Dickey serv[ed] sandwiches…and space on the restaurant sign was rented out to help pay the start-up costs for the restaurant. The menu was limited to beef brisket, pit hams, barbecue beans, potato chips, beer, bottled milk, and sodas.”
In 1967, Travis Dickey’s sons took over the family business and helped expand the company’s reach, its recipes, and the menu (though, to this day, Dickey’s still slow-smokes all of their meats, just like Travis did in 1941).
Today, the Dickey’s roll-out features “beef brisket, pulled pork, St. Louis style ribs, polish sausage, spicy cheddar sausage, smoked turkey, and marinated chicken, with an extensive array of homestyle sides from jalapeño beans to macaroni and cheese. Buttery rolls are served with every meal along with complimentary ice cream. And just like always, kids eat free on Sunday.”
When asked why he chose Dickey’s, Patel told What Now Philly, “They are the number one barbecue franchise, and the North has yet to see a multi-chain restaurant revolved around barbecue [in this way].”
