El Taco and Burritos will soon be opening a second location in University City at 3702 Spruce St.

According to real estate data, a lease signed in September 2021 for a 2,079 square-foot space shows that El Taco has plans to become a mainstay in the UPenn area.

Co-owners Alvaro and Edna Luna say they wanted to bring something different to the table.

“There are six pizza places within a two block radius from here. We want to give college students another option,” Luna told Al Día News in 2018. At the time, El Taco and Burritos debuted their original location at 3233 Powelton Ave. and quickly became a favorite for nearby Drexel students.

Now, UPenn students will also get a taste of El Taco’s delicious Mexican fare. Popular items include Tacos Birria, Oreo Churros, and Shrimp Empanadas. With a variety of meat and veggie options to go inside their crispy tacos or burrito bowls, El Taco also specializes in homemade salsa.

El Taco also offers weekly Taco Tuesdays, promotions for first responders and college students, as well as fundraiser programs. The University City location can expect to operate under the same hours as their Powelton Village location. Currently, they are open Monday through Saturday from 4:00 to 9:30 p.m. for takeout only due to Covid-19.
