A long-anticipated bakery is nearing its opening date. Essen North, the latest concept from James Beard-nominated pastry chef Tova du Plessis, will make its Fishtown debut in January of 2024, reports The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Essen North, set to open at 110 West Berks Street, will be du Plessis’s second Essen location. The space will provide 2,800 square feet for patrons to enjoy bagels, breakfast sandwiches, and a good cup of coffee. The original Essen will remain in operation at its home in East Passyunk, allowing hungry customers to scratch their itch for fresh, delicious chocolate-halva babka at two locations.

Du Plessis initially intended to open Essen North in spring of 2023, but is on track to begin serving her celebrated treats in early 2024. The baker has a vision for the community she hopes to create at the new cafe. Speaking to Philadelphia Magazine, du Plessis described her plans, stating “The goal is to make Essen North more than just your standard bakery, and more of a sit-down cafe and restaurant where people can come for breakfast or lunch or to do some work.”

While Essen North will continue de Plessis’s legacy of incredible rugelach, challah, and babka, the new location will add an increased focus on bagels and breakfast and lunch sandwiches. Additionally, du Plessis is working with Elixr Coffee Roasters to create a unique Essen house blend coffee.
