Helen’s Sausage House, a beloved Smyrna eatery, is headed to Newark this fall. The restaurant’s second location will open at 145 East Main Street, reports Delaware Online.
The family-run establishment will take over the space last inhabited by Duck Donuts.
Helen’s proprietor Clifford Murphy III spoke to What Now Philadelphia about opening a storefront in Newark, saying “I’ve lived in Newark for the past 30 plus years. I’ve always wanted to be on Main Street-there’s some nostalgia there and plenty of foot traffic.”
Helen’s Sausage House has built up a loyal following during its 40 years in Smyrna. Murphy credits the ample positive feedback the initial location has received as inspiration for the new shop. “The opportunity was too good to pass up”, he states.
Murphy says visitors to Helen’s Newark location can expect the same great quality found in Smyrna. “We’ll bring the same menu to start” he explains, adding “if we get a lot of requests, we may add items.”
While the menu will remain the same, the Newark location won’t replicate Smyrna’s iconic Elvis room. The new facility doesn’t have the space to accommodate the memorabilia.
Murphy’s nephew, Zack Hunter, will help Murphy run the Smyrna establishment once the Newark location opens its doors. Helen’s is aiming for an October opening, though it is too early to establish a definitive date.
Murphy recommends new visitors try the sausage sandwich with peppers and onions or the pork chop sandwich, describing it as “a real showstopper.”
