One of Philly’s most unique ice cream experiences is preparing to charm Passyunk with its distinctive flavors and welcoming environment. Chef Ilissa Shapiro is opening a brick and mortar location of her vibrant and retro concept, Irv’s Ice Cream, in South Philadelphia later this year, reports The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Irv’s first started serving Philadelphia in a Cherry Street Pier trolley. Shapiro and her team are bringing the ice creamery’s unique scoops to a 932 East Passyunk Avenue storefront. Shapiro explains to What Now Philadelphia that she selected the eatery’s home by listening to patrons. “In talking to customers at the trolley, it became clear that there was a real need for ice cream in Bella Vista and Queen Village, especially after some recent closures.”
Irv’s new home will mirror the concept’s cheery atmosphere and warm heart. Shapiro explains” “Bella Vista is such a vibrant neighborhood with a strong sense of community and a love for great food. It felt like the perfect spot to expand Irv’s because the area aligns with our focus on creating a welcoming, nostalgic space that brings people together over unique and delicious ice cream. The neighborhood’s charm, walkability, and diverse mix of residents make it an ideal setting for our retro-inspired shop.”
Shapiro has a clear vision for her new storefront, that transcends a simple ice creamery. While the sweet treat is wonderful enough on its own, Irv’s will also create a space where visitors can feel comfortable and at ease-and just a bit retrospective. Shapiro states “The shop will have a warm, retro vibe that feels inviting and nostalgic. My hope is that it becomes a welcoming space for the neighborhood and the entire city.”
Of course, the ice cream will be the star, and Irv’s is bringing something truly special to South Philadelphia with its interpretation of the sweet treat. Shapiro describes what locals can look forward to, saying: “Like at the trolley, 95% of what we serve will be made in-house from scratch. I’m also looking forward to collaborating with some of the amazing local businesses in the area. In addition to our rotating seasonal flavors, we’ll be introducing vegan options, pints to go, and fun ice cream novelties.”
While Philadelphians still have a little while to wait before sampling the fare from Irv’s, they can look forward to enjoying a scoop after winter’s end. Shapiro states the business should be open and serving satisfied customers by early spring.
