A Michelin Bib Gourmand–recognized pizza shop plans to expand this year with new locations in Philadelphia and New Jersey.
Angelo’s Pizzeria, founded in 2013 by Danny DiGiampietro, started with one oven, a bag of flour and handmade mozzarella.
Now, the shop will take over the recently closed Federal Donuts & Chicken in South Philadelphia, converting it into a production facility with delivery, takeout and limited seating, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
Angelo’s Pizzeria on Ninth Street isn’t going anywhere. The new location will ease the pressure on the busy takeout-only spot. Its significantly larger kitchen, DiGiampietro told the outlet, will allow the return of specialty sandwiches.
The famed pizza joint is known for house favorites like the Grandma Pie, a thin-crust pan pizza, as well as the Italian hoagie and cheesesteak, often creating lines down the street.
Angelo’s Pizzeria earned high marks from Barstool President Dave Portnoy in his One Bite Pizza Reviews series.
“It’s the best pizza in Philly. This is spectacular pizza. Real deal pizza. Good undercarriage, good crust,” Portnoy said in the YouTube video. “9.1 [out of 10] Angelo’s. Is that too high? Only history will tell.”
The shop still holds the highest score in the city.
The production facility isn’t the only expansion for Angelo’s Pizzeria. The team also plans to open locations in Conshohocken at 79 Jones St. and in Haddon Township, New Jersey, at 310 Black Horse Pike, according to the website.
“The place has grown, sure, but the work hasn’t changed. We’re lucky to have lines out the door, and even luckier to call the people in those lines our neighbors and friends. At the end of the day, it’s simple: good dough, good cheese, and a lot of care. That’s all we’ve ever had, and it’s all we need,” the website reads.
While official opening dates have not yet been announced for the upcoming outlets, visit the website and follow along on Instagram for updates.
