There’s a new artisan/craft style pizza shop in town that’s ready to make as big of an impression in South Philly as its landmark cheesesteak neighbors. With more than 20 years of culinary and catering experience, local owner/operator Joe Betzala, who was trained by pizza consultant Gregorio Fierro, added pizza chef to his resume and opened the doors to Dough Head Pizza mid-September.
Offering naturally fermented slow age craft dough, local ingredients and equipment imported from Italy, the Dough Head Pizza operation was designed and built in a way to allow for the production of large quantities of pizza. The easy walk in, take out set up of the space is good for anyone grabbing a quick slice or picking up a whole pie.
Located at 833 Wharton Street – on the corner of Wharton and South 9th Street – in a brand new building next to the now-shuttered South Philly Bar & Grill, Dough Head Pizza promises “No frills. Just really good pizza,” according to its website.
