I don’t want to start another regional pizza war, but a beloved Brooklyn-based pizza master is currently getting ready to bring his authentic New York style pizzas to Philadelphia later this year.

Paulie Gee’s is a popular pizza joint based out of Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Founded by owner Paulie Giannone (AKA Paulie Gee), Paulie Gee’s is well known in the city for serving up wood fired pizzas straight out of the oven. A meticulous pizza connoisseur, Paulie insists that his pizzas are eaten as soon as they’re taken out of the oven in order to preserve their freshness. In 2014, Paulie stirred up controversy by banning takeout and delivery options from his restaurant in an effort to maintain his quality standards. For his many fans though, that’s exactly the kind of passion that they come to Paulie for.

Today, Paulie Gee’s now boasts over seven locations across the country, including locations in Chicago, Columbus, New Orleans, and Baltimore. Now, the team is getting ready to debut their eighth restaurant to date, moving into a brand new location in Philadelphia at 412 South 13th Street, on the corner of Waverly and S 13th Street. The new Paulie Gee’s will be replacing Amis Trattoria, a popular Italian restaurant that operated at the location before shutting down in 2019.

The new restaurant will be doing business under the name Paulie Gee’s Soul City Slice and will be operated by Paulie’s son Derek Giannone. An avid music collector, Derek will be theming the space after a traditional 1960’s Brooklyn slice shop, and has brought on his own personal collection of vinyl records to help create an inviting ambience for the space. In fact, according to Derek, a portion of the new restaurant’s proceeds will be donated to local non-profits providing music education and opportunities to underserved communities.

At the moment, Derek is still preparing the finishing touches of his new restaurant but is hoping to be operational within the next month. In the meantime, you can follow Paulie Gee’s Soul City Slice on Instagram for further updates as the space continues to develop.
