A Philadelphia ice cream staple is bringing a refreshing burst of cool to a third city location. After 35 years of serving the City of Brotherly Love, Scoop DeVille is opening a new shop in Fishtown, reports the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The shop, which makes all of its ice cream in-store, will be moving into a 700 square foot space at 1308 North Front Street. Scoop DeVille owner Spencer Philips tells What Now Philadelphia that considerable time and care went into selecting the concept’s newest Philly home. “I’ve had a number of neighborhoods on my radar for years.” he states, adding “While in theory I have a priority list of those neighborhoods a lot of the decisions are also based on opportunities… when specific spaces are available, the size of those spaces, rental rates, etcetera. Fishtown has been pretty high on the list and this specific spot fit all the criteria we were looking for, including a great landlord.”
Philips explains that he and his team have been working on broadening Scoop Deville’s reach for quite some time, assessing opportunities and locations as they arise in pursuit of well-suited homes. “We’ve been in expansion more for some time. There’s not necessarily a specific perfect time – it’s opportunity related.”
While Philips had initially aimed for a summer opening, he is now cautiously optimistic for a fall debut. He explains that it’s “tough to put a timeline on because we are currently waiting on other people to move us to the next step. Once we are given the property we should be able to open in 3-6 weeks. For now I’ll say this fall”
Fishtown residents are certain to find the Scoop DeVille experience worth the wait. In addition to delicious, house-made ice creams, the shop creates unique flavors by mixing in a range of add-ins. Philips explains: “We make all of our ice cream in our stores, however we make them as base flavors – meaning they are meant to be added to. So if you choose from our Signature Blend menu screen, you’ll see each flavor starts as a base flavor (vanilla, chocolate, cake batter, pistachio, biscoff cookie, pretzel, vegan mint, etc etc) and then adds ingredients (usually three) including things like cookie doughs, candies, fruits, nuts.”
Scoop DeVille blends together each serving individually. “We take the base flavor and the ingredients and run it all through these very unique ‘drill’ style machines to blend it into a brand-new flavor. So cheesecake ice cream, strawberries, and graham crackers turn into a strawberry cheesecake ice cream. Our top seller is the PB Dough Boi Crunch – vanilla ice cream blended with Cap’n Crunch cereal, peanut butter cookie dough, Oreo, and peanut butter. Packed with flavor and texture.”
These distinctive blends are only the beginning, however. The shop uses the frosty treats to create a range of distinctive desserts. Philips states “From these we build all sorts of sundaes, shakes, and so on. I especially like our Yo Adrian Stacker Sundae – it’s basically our blend product layered with toppings to create our version of the Snickers ice cream bar!”
Future regulars already familiar with the Scoop DeVille experience can rest easy knowing that the Fishtown location will not deviate from the established model. Those eager to sample the eatery’s fare can stop into one of its shops at 1109 Walnut Street or 538 South Street for a refreshing and unique snack.
