The restaurateurs behind Tacos Chiwas are preparing to expand beyond metro Phoenix for the first time with a brand-new concept in Tucson.
According to Phoenix New Times, restaurateurs Nadia Holguin and Armando Hernandez are developing Tortillas Chiwas at 914 N. Grande Ave. in Tucson’s Barrio Hollywood neighborhood. Hernandez told Whatnow Phoenix there is no timeline for an opening yet.
While the couple recently expanded their Arizona presence with a forthcoming Tacos Chiwas location at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport’s Terminal 4, Tortillas Chiwas appears to be an entirely new concept focused on fresh tortilla production and a chef-driven dining experience.
The upcoming concept will take over a historic former tortilla factory building that previously housed Grande Tortilla Factory for more than 60 years before later becoming La Tortilla. The building is already equipped for on-site tortilla and masa production.
In addition to supplying tortillas for the group’s restaurants, the space will also house an intimate restaurant with approximately 30 seats. During the day, customers can expect fast-casual offerings such as gorditas, quesadillas, and burritos. Dinner service, meanwhile, will feature a smaller seasonal menu with dishes including tostadas and ceviches.
Nadia and Armando built concepts such as Cocina Chiwas and Tacos Chiwas around recipes and flavors inspired by Chihuahua, Mexico, where both owners were born. Since launching their first restaurant in 2016, the culinary couple has continued to expand their portfolio and become known for modern takes on regional Mexican cuisine.
Whatnow Phoenix reached out to Tortillas Chiwas, and this article may be updated as more information becomes available.
