Nuestra Familia Bakery will open at 2523 SE 9th Ave., taking over the space vacated by Flour Market Bakery and Cafe, owner Gabriel Azcorra confirmed to What Now Portland. Azcorra said he’ll begin running limited service in October while he finishes repairs and buildout, with the bakery reaching full operation by November.
“In a month at 100 percent, yes,” Azcorra said of the timeline, adding that he’s still fine-tuning the space with tests and small adjustments before the doors fully open. “I calculate that by November we’ll be starting at 100 percent.”
Azcorra, who is also part owner of the well-known Portland bakery Dos Hermanos, said the opportunity came from a personal connection rather than a search. The previous owner, who had run the space for six years, reached out to him directly after deciding to step away from the business. “She knew me, I knew her, and she decided to leave the business, and her first option was me,” Azcorra told What Now.
Out of respect for that relationship, Azcorra said Nuestra Familia will initially continue serving some of the previous owner’s existing recipes. The purpose of this initiative is to keep bringing the type of breads that longtime customers love to find in this space. While the menu is still in progress, people can also expect new recipes that are being developed by Acorra’s family.
The name, which translates to “our family,” reflects Azcorra’s intent to build the bakery around his wife and daughters rather than his existing business partnerships. “I want people to recognize Nuestra Familia for our family,” he said.
