College Street Cafe plans to open at 635 SW College St. in Portland during the first week of November, owner Amy Nichols confirmed to What Now Portland. The shop will run as a breakfast-and-coffee spot from roughly 6:30 a.m. to 2 or 3 p.m. daily, built around what Nichols described as “the ultimate sugar bomb” menu of dirty sodas, lemonade, ice cream and crunchy-style food.
Nichols pitched the concept as a casual hangout geared toward the college crowd nearby. “Just like the ultimate chill hangout spot for the college student,” she said, describing the atmosphere she’s aiming for. A recent liquor license filing shows the space will seat 60 guests inside and another 20 outdoors, with full on-premises alcohol service alongside its food menu.
The café’s hours put it squarely in the morning-and-midday rush rather than competing for dinner or nightlife traffic, a structure that lines up with its location just off the Portland State University campus. That approach mirrors a broader trend among newer University District businesses, which have increasingly leaned toward fast, casual formats that can turn tables quickly during the lunch and coffee rush tied to the campus schedule.
“We’re looking forward to serving the community, and we can’t wait to have you come have a cup of coffee with us,” Nichols told What Now.
