Two local businessmen are partnering to open a brand new concept called Chando’s Cantina Zazon Del Mar at 730 K Street in Sacramento.
The new restaurant will move into the former home of Solomon’s Vinyl Diner, which closed last year in The Hardin near Golden 1 Center after previously serving as the home of Jewish deli Solomon’s Delicatessen, according to Sacramento Business Journal. The restaurant survived only one year after rebranding, with both concepts being a nod to Tower Records founder Russ Solomon. Now, two well-known business owners are getting ready to fill the space with Chando’s Cantina Zazon Del Mar.
The new concept is the latest from Lisandro “Chando” Madrigal, founder of Chando’s Enterprises, which operates the local chain Chando’s Tacos. Madrigal is now reopening his former restaurant and entertainment concept, Chando’s Cantina, which previously operated at 805 15th St. from 2017 to 2023. Instead of reopening the concept as-is, Madrigal is partnering with Jorge Barba, who runs South Sacramento Mexican restaurant Zazon Del Mar, to emphasize seafood more. Madrigal’s son, Carlos, will also be a partner in the business. Together, the three will launch a hybrid of both concepts, known as Chando’s Cantina Zazon Del Mar, expected to open in mid-March 2025.
When the new location opens, the downstairs area will serve as the main dining space for a full-service restaurant featuring traditional Mexican cuisine, including various meats, seafood, handmade tortillas, and tableside cocktail service. The upstairs will be overflow seating and a lounge during the day, transitioning to an entertainment venue after 10 p.m. from Friday to Sunday. Chando’s Tacos will continue operating as usual, with six brick-and-mortar locations and food trucks. Although the East Sacramento location is temporarily closed due to a fire, renovations are planned, and a food truck is currently at that site. The location is expected to reopen by the end of the year.
