Swedish Hill, an Austin-based bakery and café, is preparing to make its San Antonio debut at 6322 N. New Braunfels Ave. in the Sunset Ridge shopping center near Alamo Heights, according to the San Antonio Business Journal.
The upcoming location will occupy the former Twin Sisters Bakery & Cafe space, bringing Swedish Hill’s selection of baked goods, sandwiches, salads and other café fare to the area. Although the opening has not been formally announced by the company, George Wommack, president and CEO of Sunset Ridge owner Headwall Investments, confirmed the lease to the San Antonio Business Journal.
Swedish Hill’s roots date back to 1975, when Patricia Bauer-Slate and Tom Neuhaus opened the original Sweetish Hill bakery in a Victorian-era house in Austin. The business later relocated closer to downtown Austin in 1991, with Jim Murphy joining as a partner.
After the bakery faced potential closure in 2018, Austin hospitality group MML Hospitality took over the business. The group relaunched it as Swedish Hill in 2019, refreshing the concept while retaining elements of the original bakery’s menu and identity.
The bakery and café offers a variety of freshly made items, including bagels, croissants, kouign-amann, cookies and tarts. Its menu also includes lunchtime options such as salads, sandwiches, rotisserie chicken and deli salads. More contemporary offerings include ginger tahini kale bowls and chia seed pudding, alongside longtime favorites such as chicken tortilla soup.
The San Antonio location will mark MML Hospitality’s first venture in the city. The group operates several restaurant concepts, including Clark’s Oyster Bar, Jeffrey’s and Perla’s. Swedish Hill currently has four locations in Austin and another in Aspen, Colorado.
An official opening date and additional details about the San Antonio location have not yet been announced.
What Now San Antonio reached out to MML Hospitality and Headwall Investments for additional information about the upcoming Swedish Hill location, including its anticipated opening timeline, but did not receive a response at the time of publication.
