According to Sonoma Magazine, John Toulze and Sondra Bernstein of The Girl & The Fig are taking over the former Maya restaurant space at 101 E Napa Street, near establishments such as Caddis Wines Sonoma, Cochon Tasting Bar, and Pangloss Cellars.
Maya’s owners announced the impending closure in a Facebook post, writing, “Yes, we will be retiring after 28 years in this industry. We thank you all for all the support you have given us over the years… Fig will be taking over the space at the end of September; we wish them the best.” Maya’s last day of service will be September 21.
For locals who are unfamiliar with their soon-to-be neighbor, The Girl & The Fig was opened by Bernstein in 1997 in Glen Ellen, California. The concept serves French cuisine, and light menu offerings include salads, sandwiches, and burgers. Lunch and dinner plates range from pastis-scented steamed mussels and frites, to bone-in pork schnitzel served alongside caramelized peaches and green tomatoes. It currently operates at 110 West Spain Street in Sonoma.
Additionally, Bernstein is the founder of the Sonoma FIG Foundation Fund, a donor-advised fund established in December 2016 that offers grants to nonprofit organizations, supporting food production, farming, art, community, and education.
What Now San Francisco reached out to Bernstein to learn more about her plans for the upcoming restaurant; however, more information could not be gathered before publication.
The Girl & The Fig is slated to open in late 2025, per the Journal. Follow What Now San Francisco on Facebook for updates to this story and to stay up to date on restaurant news in the Bay Area.
